Julian Nagelsmann has turned down a return to club football in favour of signing a new contract with the German national team.

Nagelsmann signed a short-term deal with Germany in September 2023 to lead Die Mannschaft at the 2024 European Championship this summer, which will be hosted on home soil.

The expectation was that the 36-year-old would depart after the tournament and he has been linked with some of the major vacancies in European football.

Liverpool are said to have placed Nagelsmann on a shortlist of candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp, who will step down from his role at Anfield at the end of the campaign.

Bayern Munich have also considered the prospect of bringing Nagelsmann back to the club. The German was in charge of the Bavarians between July 2021 and March 2023, when he was surprisingly sacked at the Allianz Arena.

He won the Bundesliga title during his first season in charge and departed with a 71.4% win rate, the fourth-best of any Bayern manager in the Bundesliga.

On the announcement of his new deal, Nagelsmann said: “This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honour to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances we have the chance to inspire an entire country.

“The two wins against France and the Netherlands in March really touched me. We want to play a successful home European Championship together and I’m really looking forward to it together with my coaching team Challenge of a World Cup.”

Germany face Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in the group stages of Euro 2024 this summer.
