We’ve seen this before, of course. Liverpool have backed their scouts and analysts to unearth the next big thing. Sometimes that pays off. Other times, it takes years to bridge the gap. And that is the concern.

If Diaz goes, there is no room for error. The pressure on Fofana to perform straight away would be immense, especially in a team where expectations have returned overnight. Is he ready for that? Is Liverpool ready to trust that he is?

Supporters will want assurances. A smart succession plan is one thing, but this can’t just be a cost-cutting exercise in disguise. The drop-off from Diaz to a prospect must be compensated by system, structure and long-term vision. Otherwise, the short-term impact could bite.
