Lionel Messi has been named as Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player for 2024.
The Inter Miami forward takes the accolade as the league’s finest footballer after a brilliant individual campaign. Messi scored 20 goals – second only to Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke – and provided 16 assists as Inter Miami topped the regular season standings.
The 37-year-old is just the third player in MLS history to have scored 20+ goals and provided 15+ assists in a season, after Los Angeles FC’s Carlos Vela in 2019 and Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco in 2015.
He ends his first full season with The Herons named as the MLS’s best player, claiming 38.43% of the vote from players, club technical staff and the media to win the prize ahead of Benteke.
“Truly, it is an honour for me to receive this award from all of you,” Messi said.
“I’m very happy to be here every day. I’m very happy to be in this city, in this Club that is growing…It’s a pleasure to see you grow day by day. I invite you to keep fighting and striving for your dreams.”
