Liga MX Clausura: Toluca join Club América at the top of the table

Matchday 14 brought us all the drama, as to be expected when the headliner is an all-Mexico City affair with Cruz Azul hosting Pumas, with both sides aiming to solidify their Liguilla positions.

Both teams were caught up in midweek CONCACAF Champions Cup action as La Máquina recorded a goalless draw with Club America whilst Pumas scored a last-minute equaliser against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Tigres also had to settle for a bore-draw in their continental midweek tie against LA Galaxy but turned their attention to Puebla.

Other standout fixtures for the weekend saw Club América travel to Hidalgo to face Pachuca, a fixture Las Águillas have won just once in their last six meetings. Chivas were winless from their last four and had the difficult task of heading to Monterrey, whilst Toluca met bottom-side Santos Laguna in an attempt to reduce the gap at the top of the table.

What happened this weekend?

Friday 4th April 2025

Querétaro 1-1 León

Leon dropped even further down the table and into fifth with a draw against Los Gallos. After nine games, they were top of the league and unbeaten. Now, they are winless from their last four as Aldahir Perez scored in halftime to cancel out Salvador Reyes's early goal for the Guanajuato side.

Tijuana 1-2 Necaxa

Necaxa made it three wins in a row to close the go fourth in a game that was decided by a hectic ten minutes of action. Five minutes after the restart, Necaxa took the lead through Pavel Perez moments before José Zúñiga got Tijuana level from the penalty spot. which lasted for two minutes as Jose Paradela restored Necaxa's lead before the half point of the game. Tijuana sit seven points outside of the playoffs and would need a miracle in the final three games to mount the most unlikely of comebacks.

Puebla 0-0 Tigres

Pubela ended a run five straight league defeats and a streak of four consecutive losses to Tigres with a goalless draw on Friday night with the visitors gearing themselves up for a crucial second leg in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against the LA Galaxy.

Saturday 5th April 2025

Atlas 1-1 Juárez

Juárez move a step closer to confirming a place in the play-in tournament with a point in Guadalajara as Guilherme Castilho opening the scoring for the visitors but they were denied of maximum points when Matias Coccaro pulled Atlas back into the game to salvage a point.

Pachuca 1-0 Club América

Salomón Rondón scored the only goal of the game to keep Pachuca's hopes of an automatica spot in the playoffs alive. The result leaves Club América joint top with Toluca, whilst Cruz Azul, Necaxa and León are all close behind with three points being the difference between all five sides.

San Luis 2-1 Mazatlán

All the action in this one came in the first half as San Luis took the lead twice through Rodrigo Dourado, and Sebastien Lamonge hit the back of the net to move the side up to 13th.

Monterrey 3-1 Chivas

The big meeting between Sergio Ramos and Javier Hernandéz took place in Monterrey as Ramos' Rayados had the last laugh with a comfortable win to bounce back from the surprise loss to Tijuana last week. The three points take Martín Demichelis's men up into 8th, four points behind their city rivals in Tigres.

Cruz Azul 3-2 Pumas

Pure chaos broke out at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla as Cruz Azul held on for maximum points against their city rivals. Pumas took the lead through Ignacio Pusetto, but the sides were back level before the half hour mark due to a Rodolfo Rotondi equaliser. The real drama started in the added minutes of the first half when Pumas had a penalty but were denied by Kevier Mier in the Cruz Azul goal, before La Máquina went up the other end and scored a spectacular free kick through Andres Montano, who scored a second in as many league games. Cruz Azul doubled their lead in the second half when Rotondi scored his second of the game but were made to hold on when Adelberto Carrasquilla converted the second penalty of the game, making up for Nathan Silva's missed attempt earlier in the game.

Sunday 6th April 2025

long-range joined Club América at the top of the table this weekend with a narrow win against bottom side Santos Laguna. Paulinho scored his third in four games to get the ball rolling before Marcel Ruiz's long ranged curler flew towards the top corner to score an incredible second for the hosts. Heading towards a fourth straight win, they were made to hold on by Fernando Ortiz's side when Javier Guemez pulled one back for the visitors, but they weren't able to force an upset.
