Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has revealed that midfielder Ao Tanaka is set to be out for several weeks with a knee injury.
It comes as another blow for Farke and Leeds after skipper Ethan Ampadu was ruled out until after the international break with an ankle injury.
And speaking after Leeds’ Carabao Cup exit on penalties to Sheffield Wednesday, Farke revealed Tanaka has suffered an MCL injury in his knee.
Farke did not put an exact timeline on Tanaka’s recovery, but said he will be out at least until after the upcoming international break, which starts next week.
“MCL injury, he will also be out for a few weeks,” Farke said. “It’s difficult at the moment to say exactly when he can return but also definitely not before the international break so it’s quite a similar injury to Ethan Ampadu’s.”
Leeds had equalised late on against local rivals Wednesday through Jayden Bogle but missed all three of their spot-kicks in the resulting shoot-out.
“We feel a bit embarrassed that we don’t win such a game and you can just say sorry anyhow because they (the fans) made the trip and wanted to celebrate,” Farke said.
“Of course we would have wished to have given them a better outcome and also got into the next round.
“We would have liked to have got into the next round but the reality today is that we sadly missed too many chances.”
