Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri will have to trim down his senior squad to 17 outfielders, which will force him to leave out two players.
The registration issue has been haunting the team since last season, when Marco Baroni had to exclude Elseid Hysaj for the first half of the campaign, before omitting Luca Pellegrini later on. According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, Sarri could be facing the same problem this term, as he currently has 19 players vying for 17 spots.
The manager can register as many U22 players as he likes, so Reda Belhayane and Oliver Provstgaard are safe. Moreover, Danilo Cataldi is a youth product of the club, so he won’t occupy a spot on the senior list. On the other hand, the source identifies the players who are facing the chopping block.
First of all, Sarri might decide to drop one between Samuel Gigot and Patric. While the manager remains fond of the Spaniard, he has been plagued by injuries for more than eight months. As for the French defender, he remains at the bottom of the pecking order, but Lazio may decide to keep him if Patric fails to regain his fitness soon enough.
The report also mentions Toma Basic as another player who could be left out as he’s been put on the shelf for the past two years, even though the Croatian has been showing encouraging signs in pre-season. Another solution would be the omission of a full-back, with Luca Pellegrini, Manuel Lazzari and Hysaj at risk.
Finally, Lazio could decide to sell one between Tijjani Noslin and Matteo Cancellieri. The returning Italian winger has been one of the best performers in pre-season, but he has several suitors on the market, unlike the Dutchman, who might end up lingering at Formello due to the lack of interest in his services.
