The new format of the UEFA Champions League has taken inspiration from the concept visualised by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for the European Super League.

After all, Los Blancos were prepared to break free from UEFA’s monopoly and create an event of their own with other elite clubs in Europe where teams would play in a league of their own.

The advantages of the proposed model were clear – a better share of the profit and superior economic returns to clubs that generate more revenue from their viewership.

Tebas speaks on the Super League

Speaking to the media earlier this week, La Liga president Javier Tebas spoke in depth about the European Super League that Florentino Perez has been trying to pioneer for years and everything wrong with it.

“The first thing, let it be very clear who is behind it. Florentino Perez. You have to show your face,” he began.

“Second, it is not serious that we have three formats in three years. We can’t be talking about saving football, as Perez said, and do this,” he added.

Speaking on the concept of an autonomous league run without an overseeing body, Tebas elaborated on the flaws in the model.

“It is also very unserious to present a format that does not talk about governance. Or the television model. One day everything is free, another day it’s hybrid, another day I don’t know what it’s like. It looks like a circus.”

The La Liga president even had harsh criticism towards the format of qualification proposed for the competition, claiming an ‘elitist’ approach.

“Teams can qualify from the national leagues, but of the 16 slots, 12 belong to the five major leagues. It seems a little elitist,” said Tebas.

“Then they are talking about Spain having three, but maybe it’s two. Who is going to go? The usual ones, Real Madrid and Barcelona,” he added.

Tebas’ final comment on the format itself was about how it would increase the economic divide between the elite and other clubs in the respective national leagues.

“If they always go to a competition that we assume will generate a lot of money, there will still be more gap in the national competitions,” he remarked.

“And the more economic gap, the less competitive it is and the more value it will lose.”

Giving his final verdict on the topic, Tebas insisted that the new league would only destroy football, saying,

“I’m sure it would do devastating damage. More than saving football, that mission to which Real Madrid came, seems to come to destroy it,” he concluded.
