France are hopeful Kylian Mbappe will not require surgery to fix his broken nose and he can carry on playing at Euro 2024 by wearing a protective mask.

The France captain broke his nose during his side’s opening game of the tournament on Monday night, which they won 1-0 against Austria.

Mbappe’s face collided with defender Kevin Danso’s shoulder when trying to head the ball from a corner and he was forced off for the final five minutes.

The France captain, who setup the only goal of the game when Austria defender Max Wober turned his cross into his own net, had blood streaming from his nose and required treatment on the pitch before coming off.

Mbappe has since undergo scans at Duesseldorf hospital and it has been confirmed he has suffered a broken nose.

The French Football Federation (FFF) have announced that Mbappe does not require surgery “immediately” and he will undergo treatment in the coming days.

It is unclear when Mbappe could return, with France facing a huge game against Holland on Friday, but a protective mask is now being made for the forward to wear.

“Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second half of the Austria v France match this Monday in Duesseldorf,” a statement from the FFF read.

“The captain of the French team was first taken care of by the medical staff and doctor Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed a broken nose. The diagnosis was confirmed during radiological examinations at the Duesseldorf hospital.

“Kylian Mbappe has returned to the base camp of the French team. He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately.

“A mask will be made so as to allow the number 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment.”

France boss Didier Deschamps said after the match that Mbappe was “not doing well” and admitted “his nose got badly hit”.

Deschamps added: “We need to check it out but it seems quite complicated, which is really very unfortunate for us. He didn't get off lightly.”
