Nicolas Kuhn revealed that Cesc Fabregas’ personal interest in him before his move to Celtic played a significant role in his choice to sign for Como.

The German winger who was signed by the ambitious Serie A club for £16.5 million is one of many new additions this summer, contributing to the club’s total outlay exceeding £90 million – placing them among Europe’s biggest net spenders.

Ahead of the inaugural matches at the Como Cup, Kuhn expressed that facing the Scottish champions would be a “special” moment if it happened.

Speaking via Glasgow Times, Kuhn said: “I had good talks with Fabregas. He wanted to bring me over before I went to Celtic. So he knew about me for a couple of years and that was a big part. I think the project speaks for itself and they want to grow fast.”

With Celtic facing off against Ajax tonight, Kuhn, by coincidence, is set to face off against one of his former teams this weekend. Jong Ajax [Ajax’s equivalent of Celtic’s B team] is where the 25 year-old began his career.

“Just before I left Glasgow, we were joking,” he said. “So I didn’t actually say goodbye, I said see you in two weeks. So now I’m looking forward to seeing all the lads back here. It will be nice. I hope we play Celtic. Obviously I know a lot of players from Ajax as well. But Celtic would be something special.”

Ahead of the tournament kicking off, Fabregas explained why he identified Kuhn as a key signing in his effort to improve on the club’s 10th-place finish during their first ever Serie A campaign last season.

Fabregas said: “Speed and quality. It’s the way he comes inside and his ability on goal. He scored 21 goals, even if Celtic are really superior in many parts of the score, to score that many and get 15 assists is very impressive. We need goals in our team.”

“We get lots of good opportunities to score goals but we were lacking a little bit in that part of our game last season. So hopefully he can bring experience, quality and goals.”
