KRC Genk coach Thorsten Fink is calling for referees to be protected ahead of the start of the Belgian national champion-deciding play-offs next weekend.
Writing on his Instagram account, the German coach addressed the prior controversies of the regular season, saying:
“Fans, coaches and even clubs are increasingly fierce towards referees, in amateur and professional football. My son plays amateur football and I go and watch when I have time. Sometimes you see hostility at matches, even from parents. Pierluigi Collina recently discussed that it is more difficult than ever to be a referee.”
While Fink understands the emotion and the pressure on officials, he misses the respect of yesteryear. “Everyone is doing their best to do well. And yes, mistakes are made: nobody is perfect. We are not machines. Although: even machines make mistakes, just look at AI. Nobody in the world deserves hate, but unfortunately, there are some unpleasant developments in society at the moment.”
Fink’s final suggestion? “Let’s all put our money where our mouth is and show a little more appreciation, tolerance and acceptance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the referees. You are doing a great job. Without you, we would not be able to play our beautiful game.” Genk will play KAA Gent at home on Sunday.
