Manchester United’s latest position on Kobbie Mainoo has emerged after the club’s decision to block his request for a late loan exit.

Mainoo requested move away from United

Ahead of deadline day, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed that Mainoo has informed the club of his desire to head out on loan for the 2025/26 season.

Mainoo’s future was the subject of intense speculation in the final days of the just-concluded summer transfer window, amidst playing time concerns under Ruben Amorim.

The Carrington academy graduate was an unused substitute in United’s opening two Premier League fixtures against Arsenal and Fulham. He started in the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town and produced a decent performance, only to be named on the bench once again for the subsequent clash vs. Burnley.

It’s understood that Mainoo’s decision to seek a move stemmed from his need for regular playing time, with the long-term goal of earning a place in England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Several suitors including Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Fulham, Napoli, AS Roma, Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea all explored a move for Mainoo but United were adamant he would not be allowed to leave.

Now, United’s latest stance on Mainoo has emerged.

United make Mainoo decision

According to TEAMtalk, United have given Mainoo their “full support” to turn things around at Old Trafford and become a mainstay in the team.

The news outlet notes, “Mainoo will assess his situation again ahead of the January transfer window but United hope he has signed a new contract by that point.”

“Sources insist they are open to a new agreement with the player if he can fully embrace the challenge of becoming an important first-team player.”

It’s understood that Mainoo’s camp are of the opinion that Amorim doesn’t have a long-term plan in place for the player.

Mainoo is concerned that Amorim’s clear preference is for other alternatives like Bruno Fernandes, but the head coach is intent on giving the 20-year-old sufficient opportunities to prove himself.
