Kane breaks the deadlock: England back in the elite league

Thanks in part to a goal from Harry Kane, England have completed their return to League A of the UEFA Nations League. The FC Bayern striker scored the opener for the Three Lions on Sunday evening in what was ultimately a crushing 5-0 (0-0) win over Ireland. Before their captain's goal, England had struggled for long periods against their neighbours - but then Ireland's Liam Scales (51st minute) brought down England's Jude Bellingham in the box and was consequently shown a yellow card. Kane stepped up to the spot and converted the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute. That broke the visitors' resistance and Anthony Gordon (56'), Conor Gallagher (58'), Jarrod Bowen (76') and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (79') added more goals.

Kane later summed up the important success at England's national stadium on Instagram: "No better way to end the year in an England shirt than a big win at Wembley!"

Peretz with another clean sheet for Israel

Daniel Peretz kept a clean sheet against Belgium - his second in four days.

Despite Daniel Peretz keeping another clean sheet, the Israeli national team have been relegated to the second tier of the UEFA Nations League. Three days after the 0-0 draw in France, the FC Bayern keeper didn't concede in the 1-0 (0-0) win over Belgium on Sunday, although the narrow victory thanks to Yarden Shua's goal wasn't enough to overtake their rivals on points after the 3-1 first-leg defeat in September. Israel finished bottom of Group A2 and will compete in League B in the next edition of the competition.

Austria miss out on direct promotion

A disappointing evening for Konrad Laimer and his teammates, as Austria were held to a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Slovenia in Vienna on Sunday. The FC Bayern midfielder, who once again started for his home country and was only substituted in stoppage time, had to watch as his team, after taking the lead through Romano Schmid (27), relinquished the lead and what they thought was certain victory after Gnezda Cerin scored a late equaliser (81').

Konrad Laimer played for Austria in Vienna until stoppage time.

"Slovenia hardly had a chance for 90 minutes and then you concede a goal like that. We had chances to score three, four, five goals. Now we're almost empty-handed and are heading into this play-off with the aim of advancing to League A," said Laimer after the final whistle. As Norway had beaten Kazakhstan 5-0 in the parallel match, Austria relinquished first place in Group B3 to the northern Europeans and will now face a third-placed team from the top flight in the play-offs next March. The draw will be made on 22 November in Nyon.

France wrap up group win

Despite not playing on Sunday, Kingsley Coman had plenty to smile about.

The French national team featuring Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League as group winners. In the 3-1 (2-1) victory in the final group game in Italy, however, the three FC Bayern players were rested and watched from the bench. Adrien Rabiot (2'/65') got a brace for the Équpe Tricolor and Italy's Guglielmo Vicario (33') scored an own goal. Andrea Cambiaso (35') did manage to pull one back for the home side. After losing 3-1 at home to the southern Europeans at the beginning of September, goal difference was ultimately the deciding factor in giving France the group win over Italy, who were level on points. Coman and Co. will find out who they'll face in the last eight in March at the draw in Nyon on Friday.
