Pep Guardiola’s men chase first place in Group G

Manchester City close out their Club World Cup group stage campaign this evening, meeting the giants of Turin, Juventus, at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. Unfortunately for the viewer, the tie is something of a dead rubber - both sides involved have already confirmed their progression to the knockout stages after cruising beyond groupmates Wydad AC and Al Ain.

There is something on the line, though, and not just bragging rights. As Juve and City are tied for points, the top spot in the group is still up for grabs, meaning that knockout ties are yet to be decided. To finish first theoretically grants an easier round of 16 opponent, which will be decided as Group H is tied up in the small hours of Friday morning. Tonight’s winner will likely sidestep a dreaded meeting with Real Madrid, with the loser likely to face RB Salzburg.

What better time, then, for City to bag their first win against Juventus? The Bianconeri came out on top when these sides met in the Champions League last December, and will hope to repeat the feat this evening in Florida. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.

Igor Tudor is here to win.

Juventus come into the tie top the of group on goal difference and know they could dodge an unappealing meeting with Real Madrid should they end the day in first, but Tudor will not play for a draw.

He said: “There is a great desire to do well, there is a good energy; already by qualifying for the next round, we have achieved the first of our objectives, and this makes us feel good.

“We want to win. We cannot try to play for a draw. We go onto the field to win; you do not prepare to play matches to draw.”

A blow for Echeverri

It was all going so well for Claudio Echeverri.

After rejoining City from Rive Plate, the 19-year-old scored his first goal for the club in last week’s 6-0 rout of Al Ain.

But he also picked up an ankle injury in that tie, and Guardiola has confirmed it will likely end his tournament.

Speaking ahead of the Juve clash, he said: “He has some problems with his ankle. It will be two or three weeks out, unfortunately. I feel so sorry for him, for all of us.”

Who comes in the next round?

Both City and Juve are moving on to the next round - that is a fact. But who will they meet there?

Unfortunately, we cannot yet say - it depends on both this result, and that of RB Salzburg vs Real Madrid, which kicks off at 2am BST tomorrow and will settle the final standings of Group H.

The situation there is the same is it is here - Real and RB are tied for points and will meet to decide who tops the group, though Madrid currently lead on goal difference.

In short, a win for City or Juventus tonight means they can put off facing Real Madrid until the quarter-final.

Rodri makes his return to the starting XI for the first time since September 2024. He made cameos in both of City’s previous Club World Cup ties.

Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden both stay on the bench as Guardiola opts for a Savinho-Marmoush-Doku front three.

New kids Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri both return to the lineup.
