Juventus Eye Bologna Star but His Departure is Unlikely

Juan Cabal going down with a major knee injury forces Juventus to change their plans and seek a lefty in the back, and Jhon Lucumi is the latest defender attached to them for such a purpose. The Bianconeri made a few attempts to sign players already familiar with Thiago Motta in the summer but haven’t succeeded.

According to TuttoSport, the Colombian international fits the profile of what the Old Lady is looking for. They want somebody with Serie A experience and a solid marker with decent ability with his feet.

Given his traits, Lucumi would replace more Gleison Bremer than Cabal in the Juventus backline. He’s under contract only until 2026. He might ask out if a big team comes calling and Bologna have little chance of advancing in the Champions League come January.

On the other hand, the Bianconeri would need to mend fences with Bologna first. Their owner refused to do business with them after they poached their coach. Their CEO Claudio Fenucci was direct after being quizzed about Real Madrid being keen on the Colombian international (via Alfredo Pedullà).

“There won’t be meaningful departures in January.”

Our Take on Juventus and Lucumi

He and Jakub Kiwior have been the only left-footed defenders linked to them so far. The Pole has more experience on the wing, but Arsenal don’t seem inclined to let him go. Bologna signed two okay center-backs last summer, but they might have the same stance, especially if the Bianconeri come calling. Given the deteriorating state of its defense, the Old Lady might have to splurge a little to fix it with a surefire solution, which wasn’t in their plans.
