Juve suffer setback against Atalanta

Image de l'article :Juve suffer setback against Atalanta

To be straight to the point, it was a very bad night for the Bianconeri at the Allianz Stadium. Juve lost 0-4 at home against Atalanta, and it was such a disappointing scoreline for Juve that you would have go back to 1967 to find the last occasion that they last suffered such a home defeat of that margin.

It was an opportunity to draw level on points Atalanta in third place, and stay just six point off the top of the table, but instead the evening went in a completely different direction.

THE MATCH REPORT

The match started at a high tempo, with both teams looking to be on the front foot. Khephren Thuram almost gave Juventus the lead in the 7th minute, but his powerful effort flew over the crossbar. Atalanta responded immediately through Ademola Lookman when he was picked out by Ederson in the 8th minute, but his shot deflected behind for a corner off of Thuram.

The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute: Weston McKennie used his arm to intercept the ball in the box and the referee awarded a penalty after a VAR check. Matteo Retegui stepped up and finished the penalty with precision to beat Michele Di Gregorio and make it 0-1.

Having taken the lead, Atalanta continued to push for a second. Marten de Roon had a chance to double their lead in the 39th minute but shot wide from a good position. Towards half-time, Juventus came under increasing pressure as Lookman hit the post in the 46th minute, before Di Gregorio made a miraculous double save to deny Davide Zappacosta just before the interval.

SECOND HALF

In the second half, Gian Piero Gasperini's team started strongly and doubled their lead after just 50 seconds. Lloyd Kelly lost possession in midfield, Lookman shot and Di Gregorio parried clear, but de Roon was the quickest to react to the rebound and slotted home to make it 0-2.

Juventus tried to react through McKennie in the 48th minute, but he was unable to make the most of a good position. However, it was in fact Atalanta who, strengthened by going two ahead, had very few problems controlling the match, and after another chance for Lookman, they put the game out of sight in the 66th minute: Sead Kolasinac inventively backheeled the ball to Zappacosta, who beat Di Gregorio with a precise shot to put his side 0-3 up.

The Bianconeri tried to pose a threat with McKennie and Dusan Vlahovic in the 75th minute, but Atalanta's defence held firm. In the 77th minute the fourth goal arrived: Lookman took advantage of a defensive mistake, drove with the ball and shot, with his effort taking a key deflection off of a Bianconeri player to wrong-foot Di Gregorio and make it 0-4.

In the closing stages, McKennie came close to grabbing a consolation goal in the 89th minute, but Marco Carnesecchi was on hand to deny him.

That was the end, and there is very little more to add about a disappointing result.
