Lorenz Assignon (23) is nearing a move to Burnley, as per reports. Stade Rennais manager Julien Stéphan has now confirmed the Frenchman’s imminent departure.

Assignon began the season as Rennes’ uncontested right-back following the departure of club captain Hamari Traoré, however, the change of manager was not kind to him. Benjamin Bourigeaud has featured at wing-back, whilst Guéla Doué has recently moved ahead of Assignon in the pecking order. Alidu Seidu’s arrival from Clermont Foot only further demotes Assignon, who was therefore keen to leave Rennes before the closure of the transfer window.

‘I don’t know where he is going, but he is leaving’ – Stéphan

As reported by Foot Mercato, Assignon is set to join Burnley on loan until the end of the season. The deal does include an option not make the move permanent in the summer. Speaking in a press conference on Thursday, Stéphan confirmed that Assignon was in the process of leaving the club, but did not reveal his destination.

“Regarding the start of the season, Lorenz had the possibility of almost nailed-on certainty of playing a lot of matches, he thinks that the arrival of Alidu could change things and so I don’t know where he is going, but he is leaving,” said the Rennes manager.
