John Textor has outlined his stance on potentially taking over Sheffield Wednesday
John Textor is not currently in negotiations with Sheffield Wednesday over a takeover of the club, but is "monitoring" the desperate situation in South Yorkshire.
The ownership situation at Hillsborough has been the subject of intense speculation amid financial issues under Dejphon Chansiri.
Wages have not been paid on time on multiple occasions since March, leading to a number of stars departing by terminating their contracts, including Josh Windass and Michael Smith.
Sheffield Wednesday have also been placed under registration restrictions throughout the summer transfer window, with Danny Rohl also departing as manager and being replaced by his assistant Henrik Pedersen as a result.
Textor has outlined his interest in a potential deal to take over Sheffield Wednesday from Chansiri following the sale of his stake in Crystal Palace.
However, the American business has claimed that he has not held any discussions with anyone involved with the club amid reports a £100 million valuation has been set by the current owner.
“I have always been a fan of the most traditional English clubs,” said Textor, via journalist Alan Myers on X.
“My great grandfather was English, and I have long understood the importance of Sheffield Wednesday in the history of football.
“I often cite the club as an example of what’s wrong with football today, the lack of parity, because of the influence of money, and I wish there was a system where the Sheffield Wednesday's of the world could be champions again.
“Whenever I talk about how I think the system should be better, I often use Sheffield Wednesday as the example of the big traditional club that deserves to be champions or at least have the opportunity to be.
“It’s true that I am looking for a traditional English club to buy, or with which I can partner.
“I just have not spoken with anybody at Sheffield Wednesday yet, and I am monitoring the situation, hoping to better understand it.”
Chansiri has become an extremely unpopular figure at Sheffield Wednesday, so supporters will be keen for anyone to step in and lead a change in ownership - even if it's someone that has a questionable, up and down track record.
There are reasons to be wary of Textor, as highlighted by his total mishandling of French giants Lyon since taking them over.
His experience in English football came with Crystal Palace, where he had limited control over determining the path forward for the Eagles, so it’s also hard to credit him for their rise under Oliver Glasner in recent times, although he was a significant stakeholder.
But Chansiri is tanking Sheffield Wednesday at the moment, so it is reaching a point where anyone else will do as far as fans are concerned - and many are clamouring for Textor to do something about it with his riches.
