Jason Tindall watched on as Newcastle United lost at Aston Villa.
United going a goal down due to a mistake by Sandro Tonali and a wicked deflection off Fabian Schar.
Newcastle United recovered though and equalised through Schar, then whilst riding their luck a bit at times, got past the hour mark still level.
Then with Anthony Gordon at the side of the pitch waiting to replace him, Jacob Murphy guilty of ball watching and tracking back far too late on Maatsen, who was then played in to score the killer goal that put Villa 2-1 up.
The damage done and then two other goals swiftly followed for the home side, including another ridiculous deflection, this time off Dan Burn.
Jason Tindall once again filling in for Eddie Howe, however, this time a defeat, following on from the 4-1 and 5-0 victories he had been in charge of, against Man U and Palace respectively.
Jason Tindall reflecting on Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1:
Jason Tindall on Eddie Howe:
“Until I’m told otherwise, then taking charge of the team) is my duty and what I have to do.
“I have said it before, the most important thing for Eddie is that he rests and he recovers.
“The more he does that, then the sooner he will be able to come and lead the team again.
“As soon as there is any more news [on when Eddie Howe will return to work], then I’m sure the media team will update on that.”
Jason Tindall on how the match played out:
“Possibly a game too far for the same starting eleven [the same team had started seven games in a row].
“But when the team is in such a great moment and the players are in such good form, it does make it difficult to change the team.
“You could quite easily be sitting here having made three or four changes, then the same result happens.
“Then everyone is saying, ‘why did you change the team?’
“It can work both ways.
“Probably , on reflection, certainly in the second half, maybe it was just a step too far for the lads physically, with the physical effort that they have put in, the previous two games.
“Aston Villa deserved to win.
“Whilst from our perspective, maybe a third game in six days caught up with us around about the hour mark.
“We knew that they would start fast and their record here at Villa Park is what it is for a reason.
“We were disappointed with the start but we showed great character to get ourselves back into the game, to go in level at 1-1 at half time.
“The second half we went out and started ok, but around the hour mark when we conceded the second, the physicality and effort caught up to us.
“We started making little errors that are unlike us that led to goals.
“Full credit to the players, the effort they have put in this week is there for all to see but maybe today was a step too far for us.
“I wouldn’t say that it is a reality check.
“It was always going to be a tough game coming here to Villa Park.
“What a fantastic side they are with a great manager.
“We have had many setbacks but one thing about the players and the club is we stick together and come out fighting.
“The message to the players, to everyone, is we can’t lose sight of where we are.
“We are third in the Premier League and if you had said to anyone at the football club at the start of the season, would you be happy with being third in the Premier League with five games to go, I think everybody would have said yes.
!We certainly can’t lose sight of that and we have done incredibly well to get ourselves in that position.
“We have been really, really consistent and delivered some excellent performances.
“So, that is the biggest message.
“To make sure that we rest, recover, and then when we get back to work, we prepare right to go and deliver a good performance against Ipswich.”
Jason Tindall on Fabian Schar:
“Fabi was feeling his hamstring in the game.
“So we felt it was the wise move to bring him off and to try and protect him.
“To make sure that hopefully he’s okay for the remaining games.”
