The midfielder was a surprise omission from the matchday squad on Sunday for the visit of former club Leicester City.

Speaking after the game, Ange Postecoglou expressed confidence that Maddison would be fit to face Brentford this weekend, but the Spurs boss has now confirmed a far longer absence.

"Madders has got a calf strain, he's probably two or three weeks [out]," Ange Postecoglou told reporters on Wednesday.

Maddison is now expected to miss the Premier League trip to the Bees, the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool and the FA Cup fourth-round clash at Aston Villa.

The visit of Manchester United in the league in the middle of February remains in doubt for Maddison, but the trip to face Ipswich a week later is more likely.

In far more positive injury news, fellow midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are fit for Thursday’s Europa League game against Elfsborg, along with centre-back Micky van de Ven. Richarlison has shaken off a groin complaint to be passed fit to face the Swedish side.

Cristian Romero will not return before next week. Djed Spence is ineligible for the midweek clash but will be fit to face Brentford at the weekend.
