Jack Butland as new Rangers captain is gaining steam

So the big big BIG breaking news today is of course the stunner that goalie Jack Butland is said have been internally named new Rangers captain in the possible event of current captain James Tavernier moving on.

Reaction to this has been pretty emphatic in truth – few Rangers fans, apart from Tavernier’s biggest backers, have been unhappy with the revelation, and it preludes a summer of significant change at Ibrox in which Tavernier is said also to be moving on.

Butland, or the goalie position, might not be everyone’s favourite choice as captain, given the ‘isolation’ the stopper feels in goal away from the bulk of the action, but FIFA rules dictate that the number one can nominate a chosen ‘captain’ of their own out on the pitch to be the one that can speak to the referee, given the impracticality of the man between the sticks being able to.

The strong speculation of recent weeks is that current captain is indeed outgoing from the club full stop, with a tonne of ‘evidence’ which points to his exit.

But the big deal of course is that Butland, as new captain in his exit, stays.

If this news is confirmed, the chance of a Butland departure, with a bunch of clickbait sites trying to use a speculated departure for hits, is massively reduced – he would be the captain, and his desire to exit might be a lot less after being given the armband.

Not that Butland has expressed any desire to leave, he’s not even said anything internally about moving on but the club know he is vulnerable.

So this gesture is a big one.

Is Butland about to be named 34th captain of Rangers?
