Mark Robins’ men were excellent for large parts against the Premier League side, and they took a deserved lead through Brandon Thomas-Asante.

However, Spurs rallied late on, with Djed Spence equalising in the 88th minute before Brennan Johnson sent the Londoners through in stoppage time.

James Maddison sends Coventry City message

Maddison was named on the bench for the game, but Ange Postecoglou was forced to turn to the England international to try and wrestle back control.

And, the 27-year-old played his part in helping Spurs win the game, on what was his return to the club where it all started in the professional game.

Maddison certainly hasn’t forgotten his roots, as he took to social media to send an emotional message to Coventry fans as he revealed his love for the club and the city.

Home is where the heart is. I’m so proud and privileged to be a Coventry City academy graduate. As I’ve got older I’ve realised how much Coventry actually means to me. My place of birth and my whole childhood into early adult life. Was a super special feeling to play in this city again with all my friends and family there (most wanting me to lose). Good luck for the rest of the season and beyond. Forever grateful. PUSB.”

Coventry City’s role in James Maddison’s career

It’s a shame for Coventry that they didn’t get to see more of Maddison, but his sale came at a time when the club were struggling financially, and he had the chance to play at a higher level.

But, everyone connected to the club should be proud of the role they played in his career, as they have helped develop a top-class Premier League midfielder who has also gone on to represent his country, so it shows they did a lot right.

It’s also nice to see that Maddison still has a real love for his boyhood club, and last night was a good opportunity for him to return to the CBS Arena, whilst the supporters also showed their appreciation.

Coventry will no doubt hope that Maddison can pull on the sky blue shirt before his career ends, although that’s obviously a discussion for another time further down the line.

Coventry City can take encouragement from Spurs performance

As for the game, there’s a lot to like for Mark Robins, even if he will be gutted at how it ended for his side.

Yet, on the whole, they more than matched Spurs for large parts, and they were excellent out of possession at shutting down the space and restricting the opportunities the visitors had. Plus, they maintained a threat on the break, but ultimately Spurs’ class showed in the end.

After a mixed start to the Championship season, this could be the performance that Coventry need to really get going as it should give them confidence.
