"It's important that we become winners and not losers," the former Torino boss told reporters in his pre-match press conference. "In the last two games, we concede from set pieces. We haven't conceded in open play. We need to get better in attack.

"We've had two good games. Crystal Palace were better than us but I didn't get that feeling against West Ham. We need to repeat the game against West Ham. We need to be more clinical to win the game."

Thoughts then turned to whether or not Flynn Downes would be back from injury in time to face Brentford on Saturday.

"We will see tomorrow if Flynn is back.

“He hasn’t trained with the team but we will see tomorrow if it’s possible to use him for the game.

"There are no new injuries."

The boss then revealed that January plans will revolve around reducing the size of the squad.

"We will have a meeting next week and decide what to do. We have too many players, we need some to leave before bringing someone in."

"The plan was we have to reduce the squad. We will have a meeting next week and then I will put forward my ideas. I prefer not to speak about that."

Southampton sit rock bottom of the Premier League, having won just one game from their opening 19 fixtures.
