Paris Saint-Germain were bullish heading into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter against Liverpool and they were right to be.

PSG dominated the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week but contrived to lose the match. Thwarted by Alisson throughout, Harvey Elliott netted the late winner to give Liverpool a lead to protect heading back to Anfield. No team that had lost to Liverpool at their home ground in the Champions League had then gone on to qualify at Anfield but that changed on Tuesday night.

Ousmane Dembélé levelled the game up on aggregate with a first-half tap-in before the game went to penalties. Darwin Nuñez and Curtis Jones both saw their efforts saved. Les Parisiens scored all four of their penalties as they progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“We showed that we are a real team. Is this team at its maximum? No. It’s only the start. I think that our mentality is to be better,” Luis Enrique told Canal Plus as he conducted his post-match duties in French.

“Today, it was a very difficult match. I think Liverpool are a very good team and it was very difficult to keep the ball but with the mentality and the personality, especially Gigio (Gianluigi Donarumma, who saved two penalties in the shoot-out) we managed to win the match. We need to rest, recuperate, and continue the party,” said the PSG manager.
