Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno has made the decision to join Napoli over Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that the timing of the move has been a key factor in Buongiorno’s decision.

Buongiorno’s name was always likely to be a big one in the summer transfer window in Serie A.

The 25-year-old was one of the outstanding defenders in the Italian top flight last season.

Buongiorno is also a player who is at his best when playing in the centre of a back three. This makes him of interest to several top clubs in Serie A who play with a back-three system.

Atalanta had tried to sign Buongiorno last summer. However, he chose to stay at Torino instead.

But this time around, the race for Buongiorno came down to Napoli and Inter.

Inter’s interest in Buongiorno was no surprise, and has been there for months.

However, a deal for the Italian international was always likely to be difficult for the Nerazzurri financially speaking.

Torino have held out for a significant fee to sell their star defender.

Therefore, Inter have not taken any decisive steps forward to try and sign Buongiorno this summer.

On the other hand, Napoli have been plugging away in their efforts to sign the 25-year-old defender.

In the last week or so, the Partenopei have gotten very close to an agreement with both Torino and Buongiorno to complete a deal.

Inter have registered an interest in signing the Italian at the eleventh hour.

This comes as the Nerazzurri consider reshuffling some pieces in defense following the surprise injury suffered by wingback Tajon Buchanan.

Therefore, Inter have contacted the Granata in the last couple days to register their interest.

However, for the player concerned, he feels that the time is right to choose Napoli.

Considering Inter would only just be at the beginning of negotiations with Torino – on a prospective deal that would be financially difficult – there would be a lot of uncertainty.

For that reason, Buongiorno does not want to wait to see how negotiations between Inter and Torino progress.

The 25-year-old is ready to commit his future to Napoli.
