Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has come in for some criticism in Italian media for the perception that he is too rigid and formulaic in using the 3-5-2 system of play.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, argue that the coach’s claims that he can switch the shape up in matches don’t really hold water considering how infrequently he actually does so.

Inzaghi’s tactics have been at the centre of some criticism in recent weeks, as the Nerazzurri’s performances as a whole have been put under a microscope amid erratic results.

The argument has gone that, when the former Lazio coach’s well-drilled 3-5-2 formation is effective he can take the credit, but too often it leads to the team being predictable and easy to counteract on the pitch.

Asked about this in his interview with InterTV ahead of today’s Serie A match against Spezia, the 46-year-old claimed that he uses the system because it is the one that best suits the characteristics of his players, as he had also done at Lazio.

Moreover, Inzaghi went on to suggest that he is more than willing to change things up within matches, possibly by playing with three attackers rather than two.

For the Corriere della Sera, however, the evidence doesn’t really support this idea, as far too often in recent matches the coach has dug in his heels and kept the team playing the same way, only making like-for-like substitutions, even when it has looked as though the usual system isn’t working.
