The Ballon d’Or is one of the most esteemed awards that a footballer can receive. On an annual basis, the trophy is presented to the player considered to have performed the best across the previous campaign, as voted for by 100 journalists across the globe.

Over the past 15 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated this prestigious trophy, with Luka Modrić and Karim Benzema also recent recipients of the award. While a player’s performance over a season is a key element of the eventual outcome, team success is also considered equally important.

Therefore, Carlo Ancelotti believes that Toni Kroos could be crowned the best player in the world.

So far this season, Real Madrid have already ensured that they will lift the Spanish title come the end of the campaign, while a Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund is just a matter of weeks away. If Los Blancos are to overcome BvB at Wembley, then this would put many of their players in contention for the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking after Real Madrid’s victory over Alavés on the weekend, the Italian commented that EURO 2024 may play a decisive part in the outcome of the award:

“Anything can happen. There are important competitions in the summer. Kroos, with Germany, has the chance to win the European Championship and do the double with the Champions League, including the league. So why not? He can fight to win it.”

Therefore, if Germany were to lift silverware on July 14, Kroos could be in pole position to win the Ballon d’Or. However, it is important to understand that players such as Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior are well-placed to challenge Kroos for the honour.
