Ipswich Town sanctioned the exit of experienced defender Cameron Burgess, who departed Portman Road for Swansea City.

The Australian international completed a move to the Swansea.com Stadium on a free transfer last week, signing a three-year contract in South Wales.

Linking up with head coach Alan Sheehan, Burgess possesses EFL experience in abundance, making 273 combined appearances across the three tiers, while he earned his first taste of Premier League football with the Norfolk outfit last term, featuring 18 times.

Such impressive performances over the years almost made it destined for him to make a move to one of the top divisions in Europe, with previous links to Rangers and Valencia.

Despite that, the 29-year-old has opted to remain in England and return to the second tier with Swansea, hoping he can help bring about a promotion push after several seasons of mid-table obscurity for the former Premier League regulars.

Given the latest news, Ipswich’s FLW fan pundit has expressed his thoughts on Burgess’ latest career move.

Cameron Burgess, Swansea City move met with shock

Speaking to Football League World, Ipswich Town fan pundit Adam Wilkin has admitted his surprise to see Cameron Burgess move to Swansea, but believes it will be a positive switch for the defender to play regular football.

Wilkin said: “When I opened up X and saw Burgess had joined Swansea, it definitely came out of the blue, and that’s no disrespect to Swansea, it was more of a shock because of the links to Valencia and Rangers. It seemed he would be making a move to the top divisions of a country somewhere, which was very well deserved, so it’s definitely a shock in that case.

“But, I think it’s a very good move for him in terms of consistent playing time, which was probably a big thing he was thinking about. He’d have probably only had a squad role at Ipswich, at Valencia and Rangers he may have only had a squad role there as well.

“He’s in the Australian national team and there’s a World Cup coming up, so he wants to be in a place where he can play regular football and prove he can start for his country, and Swansea, with their signings recently, appear to be building something good, so I think it will be a very good move for him and a very good move for Swansea.

“I don’t think it will be too bad for Town. I’d have liked to keep him around as a squad player, but as a player at his age, having been used to playing first-team football regularly the last few seasons, it’s probably the right move for both parties. We’ve got Jacob Greaves, who pipped him for team of the season in the Championship the year we got promoted, and would arguably be playing ahead of him this coming season.

“It’s sad, he’s probably the best of the promotion-winning team that’s moved on so far, but I think it’s a move that works well for all three parties, for Ipswich, for Burgess himself, and for Swansea, who have picked up an excellent centre-half at Championship level.”

Ipswich Town unlikely to feel effects of Cameron Burgess exit

While it is a blow for Ipswich Town to lose such an experienced figure at EFL level, the Tractor Boys still possess a host of defensive assets who can help the club be successful in the second tier.

As mentioned by Adam, Jacob Greaves is expected to play a vital role in a promotion push back to the top-flight, while Dara O’Shea has outlined his commitment to the Ipswich cause, having significant Championship experience previously with West Brom.

Luke Woolfenden is also an option, while Axel Tuanzebe’s versatility can see him occupy a role in central defence when called upon.

Despite the exit of Burgess being met with some disappointment by the Ipswich faithful, it doesn’t appear the club will need central defensive additions any time soon, and it’s a move that had to happen, so the Australian can keep his career moving in a forward direction.
