Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has shared a joke following his imperious defensive performance against AC Milan superstar Rafael Leao.
Speaking to Dutch broadcaster RTL7, via FCInterNews, the 27-year-old joked that now he’ll have to follow the Portuguese Rossoneri star to his car after sticking to him defensively throughout the Champions League semifinal second leg.
Inter wingback Dumfries had an excellent performance yesterday evening.
This was particularly the case in terms of the former PSV man’s dogged defensive display.
The Dutchman marked Rossoneri left-back Theo Hernandez out of the match for long periods. In addition to the Frenchman, Dumfries also had a tough job on his hand trying to keep Leao quiet.
The 23-year-old ex-Lille and Sporting CP forward is the Rossoneri’s talisman in attack.
Having Leao’s pace and technical ability back after an injury ruled the Portuguese out for the first leg could have given Milan the extra dimension that they needed to overcome the 2-0 first leg deficit.
However, it was not to be the case. The 23-year-old showed flickers of his quality here and there. However, at no point did Leao manage to make the telling impact.
The performance by Inter wingback Dumfries had a lot to do with why Leao was never really able to impose himself.
Nerazzurri wingback Dumfries was asked about coming up against the Portuguese and getting the better of him by RL7.
“Maybe now I’ll even follow him to his car,” the Dutchman joked.
“He’s a great player,” he said of Leao, “he’s very important for Milan. And my job was to make him harmless.”
“And I must say that today as a team, we really did a great job.”
Of his role in the team, Dumfries noted that “My main job is to defend, especially in matches like today’s, in which you have to read the moments well.”
“In Italy you quickly learn to ‘kill’ matches,” he continued, “And at Inter, we’re really good at doing that.”
“In the stadium, in matches like this, there’s a magical atmosphere and you go on autopilot,” he noted. “It’s great to play in matches like this.”
“The fans are very important.”
