Inter Milan wingback Federico Dimarco considers Real Madrid legends Roberto Carlos and Marcelo to be his “reference points.”
Speaking in the matchday programme for this evening’s derby against AC Milan, the 25-year-old named the pair of Brazilian icons as the two players after whom he models his own style of play.
In the past couple season, Dimarco has broken out as a key player for Inter.
The 25-year-old has also gained a regular starting place for the Italian national team.
The key to Dimarco’s rise has been his emergence as a creative outlet on the left side of the team. The Italian international plays as either a fullback or wingback, but always with a very attacking style of play.
Dimarco uses the full range of his passing to help in buildup play, create chances for his teammates, and also get forward and score goals.
In this sense, the 25-year-old is almost the consummate modern fullback.
And Dimarco has modelled his style after two of the best exponents of the position in recent decades.
Of his role models in football, Dimarco noted that “The Nerazzurri legend that I have always loved is Diego Milito.”
“It can only be him after what he did in 2010,” he said of the Argentine who scored both goals in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
“The players who have been reference points for me have been Roberto Carlos and Marcelo,” Dimarco continued. “Players who modernized the role of left-back.”
“For me, the team has always been the centre of everything,” he added.
“Being a great group makes the difference, especially in difficult moments.”
Dimarco also noted that “I was born an Interista.”
“My story with Inter is a beautiful and long one,” he went on.
“I started when I was six, and now I’m almost 26 and I’m still here.”
“It’s truly an incredible feeling to wear this shirt,” Dimarco noted.
“I grew up at other teams where I gained experience, and then I earned wearing this shirt. ”
