Inter Milan squandered a glorious opportunity to secure clear passage to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 last night.
According to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen heightened the pressure on the Nerazzurri.
Nordi Mukiele’s late strike condemned Simone Inzaghi to his first European failure this season.
More importantly, it helped Leverkusen leapfrog the defending Serie A champions in the 36-team table.
Nonetheless, Inter will likely finish Matchday 6 in the top eight, though their position no longer feels comfortable.
Indeed, Inzaghi’s team entered this round as Liverpool’s closest followers, only to slip to fourth ahead of Wednesday’s games.
A point would’ve been huge for Inter.
Unfortunately, another Leverkusen goal around second-half stoppages stunned the Nerazzurri.
However, the Italians still maintain a firm grip on automatic knockout qualification.
Inzaghi’s team will take on Sparta Prague and Monaco in the last two rounds.
Beating Sparta in Prague on the penultimate matchday would likely seal the deal for Inter.
But a lot will depend on other results.
There’s a chance the Nerazzurri would need all six points in the league-phase finale to lock down a spot in the top eight.
