Inter striker Lautaro Martinez feels that the amount of success that he has enjoyed over the past couple of years has been a great motivator for him to do even more.
Speaking to Argetine broadcaster ESPN, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old noted that over the past couple of years, he has seen his trophy cabinet grow significantly, from no major titles to seven so far.
Martinez seems to have grown along with Inter, having arrived at the club in the summer of 2018 just as they were starting to find their feet, but before they were quite ready to start winning trophies.
Now, the 25-year-old can boast the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and two Supercoppa Italiana trophies on his resume with the Nerazzurri.
In the meantime, the Argentine has also started to enjoy major success with his national team, culminating in December’s triumph at the World Cup in Qatar.
“In a year and a half, almost two, I’ve gone from having zero trophies to having seven,” the striker reflected, “this is what motivates me to keep growing.”
Martinez also spoke about the injury that he had been playing through at the World Cup, stating that “Regarding the injury I had, Messi approached me and told me to try to recover, that they needed me, that I was important for the group, for the team.”
“I told him that I shouldn’t think about myself, but just about the group.”
“I was suffering a lot and I also talked about it with him and he gave me his support,” Martinez noted.
“In Italy I was already playing through some pain, but I had dealt with it.”
“When I played my last match with Inter against Atalanta I was hurting a lot,” he continued.
“In Abu Dhabi I spoke to [Argentina coach Lionel] Scaloni and I told him the truth,” the striker added, “that I had an ankle problem and that it was better if he gave me a bit of a rest so I could arrive at the first round of the World Cup in the best condition.”
