Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi will be hoping that the team’s defensive “wall” is back ahead of tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Torino.

Tomorrow evening, Inter play their last Serie A match before the October international break.

The timing of the fixture means that it will be important for the Nerazzurri to set the tone for the months to come.

And for Inter coach Inzaghi, the priority is regaining a sense of defensive solidity.

Last season, the Nerazzurri’s defense had been outstanding. They conceded the fewest goals in Serie A, and kept the most clean sheets.

But so far this season, Inter’s defensive record has been more erratic.

Inter have conceded a total of seven goals in their first Serie A matches of the campaign.

On three occasions, Inter have conceded twice in one match. These came against Genoa, AC Milan, and Udinese.

Even as they won last weekend against Udinese, the sloppy goals that Inter conceded were a worry.

On the other hand, the Corriere note, in the Champions League Inter have yet to concede a goal.

That was certainly an impressive feat against Manchester City.

Playing away to arguably Europe’s strongest team in their opener in the Champions League, Inter came away with a hard-fought point.

That was a testament to both individual defensive quality in Inter’s ranks, and above all, discipline and organization as a team.

Inter’s clean sheet against Red Star Belgrade this week was not quite the same sort of feat. At least not on paper.

But it was a solid and businesslike defensive performance from Inter.

Getting the job done from week to week against the “smaller” team will be just as important for Inter defensively as statement displays like that against City.

And that is going to be the focus for Inzaghi tomorrow.

From the coach’s perspective there has only been one outright bad defensive performance so far this season.

That came in the derby against AC Milan, where the Nerazzurri constantly allowed their city rivals acres of space in midfield from which to launch dangerous counterattacks and create chances.

But the other goals that Inter have allowed have been more a matter of inattention than anything else.

Inzaghi has been frustrated to see his team not stay switched-on. Against Genoa, Monza, and Udinese, that has allowed their opposition to score from relatively few chances.

So starting with Torino tomorrow, Inzaghi wants the team’s defensive performances in the league to follow the lead of their Champions League heroics.
