Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is hungry to reassert himself as the driving for his team against Lazio this evening.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the Argentine is regaining physical condition, but needs to crown it with a goal and a decisive performance.
Nerazzurri captain Martinez has not been having the best of seasons.
It was a tough start to the campaign for the Argentine. After his late return to preseason training from the Coppa Italia, he was suffering from a clear lack of preparation time.
Martinez started to look a bit fresher after a few weeks. But then another string of tired-looking performances saw him slump once again.
Martinez has now gone six weeks without a goal for Inter.
The 27-year-old does have the occasional goal drought for the Nerazzurri. But he is hardly used to periods where he is lacking sharpness to this extent.
In the last couple of matches, there have been positive signs from Martinez, though.
The Inter captain did not manage to score against Parma in his last start. But that was not for any lack of trying.
It was evident that Martinez finally has the energy in his legs to play like his old self.
And the Argentine will hope that he can use this to put in a real “captain’s performance” against Lazio this evening.
Today’s match against the Biancocelesti has the feel of a potential title-decider.
Therefore, there would be no better time for Martinez to return to his blazing best.
Of course, a goal would be the perfect way for the Inter captain to announce his return. Or, perhaps, an assist.
But above all, Martinez is hungry for the three points. He wants to show that he can fight for a massive result with the captain’s armband, like he did all last season when Inter won the Serie A title.
