Inter Miami, Portland Timbers help MLS recuperate momentum in Leagues Cup 2025

MIAMI – The Leagues Cup 2025 continued with six matches on Wednesday as part of Phase One of the Concacaf-sanctioned competition between MLS and Liga MX clubs, as they battle for the crown and three spots in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Four MLS sides were on the winning end to push back from an opening night when all Liga MX sides were victorious. FIFA World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul made his Inter Miami debut as part of the night’s headlines.
Inter Miami 2-1 Atlas FC
The opening match of the day saw Inter Miami CF secure a 2-1 against Atlas FC at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Telasco Segovia gave the hosts the lead in the 57’, scoring from the center of the box to capitalize on an assist from Lionel Messi.
Rivaldo Lozano equalized for Atlas in the 80’ with a goal from inside the penalty area.
Marcelo Weigandt struck from close range secure a dramatic late winner for Inter Miami in the 90+6’, with Messi once again playing provider.
Club Necaxa 3-1 Atlanta United
Club Necaxa defeated Atlanta United 3-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The Liga MX took an early lead in the 12’ through an own goal from Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Aleksei Miranchuk equalized for Atlanta in the 28’, picking up a loose ball and scoring from inside the box.
Tomás Badaloni scored a brace to guide Necaxa to victory, first with a thumping header on a corner kick in the 77’, followed by a left-footed finish from inside the box in the 90+1’.
Pumas UNAM 1 (4) - (3) 1 Orlando City SC
Pumas UNAM and Orlando City SC played out a 1-1 draw, with the Mexican side winning the additional point in PKs, at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida, USA.
Rodrigo Schlegel headed home a corner in the 5’ for Orlando to open the scoring.
2024 Concacaf Men’s Player of the Year Adalberto Carrasquilla tied for Pumas in the 80’ with a finish to the bottom right corner.
Pumas ultimately won 4-3 in the shootout to start with two points.
Minnesota United FC 4-1 Club Querétaro
Minnesota United FC won 4-1 against Club Querétaro at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the go-ahead goal for Minnesota in the 11’ with a finish from close range.
Kelvin Yeboah doubled the lead for the hosts in the 20’ with a right-footed curler to the far post from a free kick.
Jhojan Julio cut one back for Querétaro in the 67’.
Anthony Markanich and Tani Oluwaseyi rounded out the victory for The Loons with goals in the 70’ and 90+1’.
Club América 2 (1) - (3) 2 Real Salt Lake
Club América and Real Salt Lake drew 2-2, with the MLS club claiming the additional point in penalties, at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, USA.
Diego Luna handed RSL the lead in the 16’ from inside the box.
Brian Rodríguez tied the match for América in the 42’ with a magnificent free kick to the top right corner.Zavier Gozo struck from close range in the 45+2’ to reestablish Real Salt Lake’s lead.
Érick Sánchez equalized for América late in the 90+7’ with a right-footed hit from the top of the box.
Real Salt Lake won 3-1 in the penalty shootout to secure the additional point.
Portland Timbers 4-0 Atlético de San Luis
Wednesday’s action concluded with a 4-nil win for Portland Timbers over Atlético de San Luis at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.
David Da Costa notched the opener for Timbers scored the opener in the 1’.
Kevin Kelsy doubled the lead in the 56’ with a header to the far post.
Ariel Lassiter added to the Timbers scoring run in the 73’, and Felipe Mora struck off the crossbar with a powerful right-footed shot in the 78’ to close out the win.
