Liverpool’s long-running interest in Alexander Isak is heading into a decisive phase, with just days remaining before the closure of the summer transfer window. The Swedish forward has been on the club’s radar throughout the window, but negotiations with Newcastle United have so far produced no agreement.
Liverpool, as reigning Premier League champions, have already tested Newcastle’s resolve once, only to see their opening bid rejected. Yet there are signs of movement. Newcastle’s recent capture of striker Nick Woltemade suggests their stance could be softening, although sources indicate that any potential deal for Isak would still demand significant financial commitment.
Reports have varied in recent days, with some suggesting Liverpool have contemplated an offer in the region of £130 million. That figure remains subject to speculation, but it underlines the scale of the challenge in securing Isak before Monday’s deadline. Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell and would only sanction a transfer if the terms are considered favourable.
Time is the critical element. For Liverpool, failing to conclude this move before the window shuts would represent a significant setback in their recruitment plans under Arne Slot. The Dutch manager has publicly maintained that the club will only act if the right player becomes available at the right price, but the pursuit of Isak clearly sits at the top of their agenda.
Should Isak make the switch to Anfield, he may face an unexpected issue before even kicking a ball. His preferred No.14 shirt, which he has worn with pride at Newcastle, is currently in use by Federico Chiesa. The Italian international has established himself with the number, leaving Isak to consider alternatives.
The number holds genuine significance for Isak, who has previously explained his attachment to it. Reflecting on his time at Newcastle, he cited players such as David Ginola as influences and described the No.14 as “the most iconic” choice available when he signed. However, with that option closed off at Liverpool, the possibility of taking the No.9 shirt could emerge, a number traditionally revered by supporters at Anfield.
Slot hinted on Friday that Liverpool remain active in the market. Asked about Newcastle’s attacking reinforcements, he noted the importance of strengthening at the right moment but avoided giving direct confirmation of a breakthrough. His comments suggested awareness of Newcastle’s movements, while reinforcing the principle that Liverpool will not be drawn into a deal unless it aligns with their long-term strategy.
What is clear is that Liverpool’s interest in Isak has not diminished. With Federico Chiesa already part of the squad and squad numbers potentially posing a subtle complication, the final days of the transfer window promise to be decisive. Whether Isak ultimately makes the move will hinge on Liverpool’s willingness to meet Newcastle’s terms and on whether the two clubs can bridge the gap in negotiations.
