Ever since Ruben Amorim was first linked with the Manchester United job, fans hoped he’d use his Sporting Lisbon ties to eventually bring Viktor Gyokeres to the club.
The situation couldn’t be more suitable – at least from United’s perspective.
They’re in dire need of a prolific goalscorer who can ease the burden on young Rasmus Hojlund while also not setting them back over £100 million. Previously, it’s been suggested by The Telegraph that Sporting would accept around £63m to sanction Gyokeres’ exit, despite him having an £83m release clause in his contract.
Under Amorim alone, the Swedish international played 68 matches, scoring a whopping 66 goals and assisting a further 19, while his total record for Sporting stands at 83 goals in 91 appearances. This season, he’s found the back of the net 40 times in 41 outings – truly unfathomable numbers.
Of course, it remains to be seen if he could replicate such scintillating form in the Premier League – but that won’t stop English sides from trying their luck.

The 26-year-old has already garnered interest from a host of clubs across Europe. In England, United, Chelsea and Arsenal are all thought to be admirers. Now, however, a surprise candidate has joined the race.
According to Football Transfers, Nottingham Forest have ‘initiated contact’ with Gyokeres’ representatives in hopes of hashing out a summer deal early, with writer Steve Kay labelling it the ‘most ambitious’ proposed deal in the team’s recent history.
Viewed as the ‘ideal long-term successor to Chris Wood’, owner Evangelos Marinakis has set his sights on Gyokeres in hopes of bolstering Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad ahead of a campaign that could see Forest competing on all fronts – including a deserved return to European football in the form of the Champions League.
Over the last two seasons, both Newcastle United and Aston Villa have fallen victim to their league form faltering due to the added fixture congestion that Europe brings. Marinakis, who isn’t afraid to splash the cash at the City Ground, will do his utmost to prevent the same from happening to Nuno and his men.
