Cottagers boss Marco Silva, still fuming over Josh King’s disallowed goal earlier in the game, remonstrated with referee Rob Jones as the officials walked off the pitch after the goal arrived more than a minute over the allotted added time.

Chelsea doubled their advantage after the interval from the penalty spot. Following a lengthy VAR review, Ryan Sessegnon was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and Enzo Fernandez converted from twelve yards out.

It was somewhat surprising that Joao Pedro didn’t step up for a shot at his second goal of the day, but he will be nonetheless delighted to have contributed to Chelsea’s second win of the campaign.

The former Brighton star is now on two goals for the season after scoring in last weekend’s 5-1 demolition of West Ham United, but it’s also his fifth since arriving at the club in the summer.

Pedro found the mark twice on his first start for the west London outfit, grabbing a brace against Fluminense in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. He then went on to score in the final against Paris Saint-Germain as the team lifted the newly minted trophy in July.

The 23-year-old’s impressive start is underscored by the fact he is now boasts one of the quickest starts for a Chelsea attacker in the Premier League era. Only Diego Costa and Tammy Abraham have scored more goals (seven) in their first five starts for the club.

Pedro has matched Alvaro Morata’s tally (five) with one fewer start, meaning he could yet rise in the list.

Most goals in first five starts for Chelsea in all competitions in the Premier League era:

  • Diego Costa – 7
  • Tammy Abraham – 7
  • Joao Pedro – 5
  • Alvaro Morata – 5
