Sky Sports Paul Merson has admitted he’s “shocked” and “flabbergasted” by Arsenal signing Noni Madueke from rivals Chelsea.

Madueke is set to join the Gunners in a deal worth up to £52m, and the England international is expected to sign a five year deal at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old wasn’t part of Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup final and is expected to be announced as an Arsenal player in the coming days.

Merson on Madueke joining Arsenal

Madueke’s imminent move to north London has certainly divided opinion, with a lot of Arsenal fans not happy with the signing.

Chelsea fans are also divided, given Madueke’s potential, and he had shown signs of improvement under Enzo Maresca this season.

Madueke scored seven goals and registered four assists in 32 Premier League appearances, but following the arrival of Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens he faced increased competition for his place.

Ex Premier League footballer Don Hutchinson Hutchinson expressed his surprise at Arsenal signing Madueke, and Merson has now had his say.

“I am flabbergasted by Arsenal signing Noni Madueke. I’m shocked,” he told Sky Sports.

“If Arsenal went and bought any player from Chelsea, he’d have been the last one I thought they’d sign. It’s a lot of money for a player who is not a prolific goalscorer.

“He’s the sort of player that has a good game here and a good game there, but that’ll be it. The consistency of performance isn’t there.

“For me, at Chelsea, I’d have always played Jadon Sancho ahead of him [Madueke]. Chelsea just won’t believe that this deal has come to them. They won’t believe their luck.”

Nicolas Jackson to leave?

With Madueke gone, speculation over Nicolas Jackson’s future has increased with a number of clubs interested in the 24-year-old.

AC Milan are interested in the striker, whilst Manchester United are also monitoring Jackson, who’s thought to have no desire to leave Chelsea.

Chelsea are believed to want more than £50m for Jackson, and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the coming weeks.
