Rafael Leao has admitted that AC Milan have a ‘mental issue’ as a team when it comes to taking command of games that they should win.

Milan made it four wins in a row in the Champions League by beating Red Star 2-1 at San Siro, but they needed a late goal from Tammy Abraham to spare their blushes after a laboured performance.

In the 42nd minute, the Rossoneri got themselves in front and it was a quite simply brilliant goal from Leao. He made a run off the shoulder of the last man that was perfectly timed and found by Youssouf Fofana’s ball over the top.

Radonjic equalised for the away side, but just as it looked like the game was drifting towards a draw, Abraham was there in the right place at the right time to lash home a rebound and make it 2-1.

Leao was handed the Player of the Match award after the game and he spoke to Sky to offer his thoughts on a difficult night, which were relayed via MilanNews.

How do you feel after the win?

“It was an important match, even the coach told us in the dressing room. However, with the players we have, we could have done much better in front of our fans. We complicated the match a bit but in the end we got the three points.”

What’s the problem?

“It’s a mental issue, because in these games if you don’t give your all the opponent gains confidence and then the details make the difference. So we conceded the goal. In the end we all fought together and we deserved the goal.”

You scored a nice goal…

“I try to help my teammates and they try to help me. We are a team, we continued to fight and we deserved the goal. Even those who came on gave more energy.”

Why is Theo struggling?

“There is a moment of the season that is like this, but he is a very strong player, he has been mentally focused. Sometimes he doesn’t score or make assists but he is a defender, he has to help at the back. He is a team-mate that I like a lot, we are friends. I wish him goals and assists.”

Who do you dedicate the goal to?

“Thanks to everyone, to the team. Tammy also deserved it, because she scored. But it’s a prize for the whole team.”
