FLW's Birmingham City Fan Pundit outlined his clear position on Lyndon Dykes' future
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
The debate around Lyndon Dykes' future at Birmingham City has certainly increased following his late winner against Blackburn Rovers and the arrival of German striker Marvin Ducksch.
The 29-year-old Scotland international scored the final goal eight minutes into stoppage time at Ewood Park, sliding home from close range to complete a 2-1 comeback win.
Dykes started up top with his German counterpart Ducksch in Blues' Carabao Cup defeat at home to Port Vale on Tuesday. The pair only managed one shot between them, and it wasn't on target.
FLW's Birmingham City Fan Pundit, Jason Moore, outlined his clear position on the Australian-born striker's future at St Andrew's.
"If Lyndon Dykes is happy to play a bit-part and knows his role is potentially going to be coming on for the last ten minutes to either snatch a goal or see it out, then I’m all for him to stay for the rest of the season," Moore explained.
Since arriving from QPR for a reported £1m last summer, the former Livingston striker has found himself behind others in the pecking order. Jay Stansfield being the obvious first-choice, but even Alfie May played 25 more times across 24/25 than him.
Moore did acknowledge how Dykes could prove valuable again this season, but was realistic about his long-term prospects. "Let's say we do go to the Premier League. He’s 100% not good enough, but if he’s happy being a bit-part player or just in the cup and stuff like that, I’m more than happy to keep him," Moore told FLW.
Blues' summer signing of 31-year-old Marvin Ducksch definitely complicates things for Lyndon Dykes.
The former Werder Bremen striker arrived on a three-year deal and brings similar attributes to those that Dykes offers, which means Chris Davies is highly unlikely to ever start the two together in a league match.
Ducksch's record of 32 goals in three Bundesliga seasons suggests he could be prioritised ahead of Dykes when fully fit - the German only played 45 minutes against Vale.
As per Opta, Ducksch was directly involved in 419 shots in the German top-flight since the start of 22/23, which was the most out of any player during this period.
This prompted Moore to tell FLW what he thinks about Dykes' chances: "He’s surely got to be aware that he’s going to have limited football and if he’s happy with that then I’m happy with it. Keep him.
"If he wants to stay, stay. If not, go and get some football elsewhere. If it was me, I’d keep him as a bit-part player," he concluded.
Having worked his way up from Australian semi-pro football to representing Scotland at major tournaments, you can't argue that Dykes doesn't have the kind of mentality that would be helpful to Birmingham's squad, even in a reduced role.
Ultimately, Moore's view is what's expected nowadays in modern football - where squad depth and different options can be the difference, and that's already proven to work this season for Dykes.
Whether he chooses to accept this role or seek better minutes elsewhere remains to be seen, but a decision will have to be made quickly.
