„If it hadn’t been for the World Cup…“: Bayern legend advises against Flick’s return | OneFootball

After Ralf Rangnick surprisingly cancelled his contract with FC Bayern, the search for a new coach for FC Bayern has entered the next round. One hot candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel is Hansi Flick. Bayern legend Mehmet Scholl, however, does not think this is a good idea.

The search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel is proving to be extremely complicated. After Ralf Rangnick, the third top candidate, recently cancelled his bid, bringing back Hansi Flick currently seems to be the most likely solution for taking over the coaching position at Säbener Straße. Former Bayern star Mehmet Scholl, however, takes a critical view of this option.

In an interview with BILD, he said that Flick took over Bayern as a heap of rubble at the time and „moulded it into a team that has won everything in six months.“ In his opinion, the sixth-tuple coach would have been „a top candidate – if it hadn’t been for the World Cup. But it was. And this documentary about it …“

Scholl surmised that the insights in the Amazon Prime documentary about the national team during the World Cup in Qatar „changed many people’s opinions about him.“ Nevertheless, he considers Flick „to be a great person and a very, very good coach.“

Scholl lashes out at former Flick co-coach Danny Röhl

Scholl does not see the reasons for his failure as national team coach in Flick himself, but in his then co-coach Danny Röhl: „I believe that Flick was driven crazy during the World Cup by his student co-coach, who constantly distracted him with his iPad.“ Scholl is of the opinion that Flick lost control because he trusted the wrong man.

However, if Flick were to return to FC Bayern, Röhl would most likely not return as assistant coach. He is currently firmly in the saddle at English second division club Sheffield Wednesday.

Röhl took over the club after 13 games without a win and, in his first stint as head coach, managed to keep the club in the league with 50 points from the remaining 35 games, making him a hero in the English working-class city.
