Ian Wright names player in Chelsea squad who club “can’t count on” | OneFootball

Premier League legend Ian Wright has stated Chelsea can’t rely on Wesley Fofana, with the defender once again plagued by injury issues this season.

The Blues signed Fofana from Leicester in the summer of 2022 for £70m with a further £5m in add ons and he’s had injury issues every season he’s been at the club.

Fofana missed the entirety of last season with an ACL injury, whilst this season he’s been limited to just 14 Premier League appearances and will miss the rest of the campaign.

Wright says Chelsea can’t rely on Fofana

Things were looking good for Fofana as he came through pre-season unscathed, and Enzo Maresca made him part of his first choice defensive pairing alongside Levi Colwill.

The 23-year-old put in some impressive performances, but picked up a hamstring injury in December, which Enzo Maresca claimed would keep him out for the remainder of the season.

However, Fofana returned ahead of action, but picked up another injury in training ahead of the Tottenham game at the start of April.

Chelsea have a decision to make with Fofana as they can’t continue being unable to call on him for large parts of the season.

Former Arsenal star Wright has now had his say and feels Chelsea simply can’t rely on the France international and he could need replacing.

“The one who came from Leicester, Fofana, unfortunately for him the injuries that he’s had, we can’t see it, we can’t see it continuously, so you can’t count on him,” he told the Kelly and Wrighty show.

Reports from France have suggested Chelsea could be open to loaning or selling the Frenchman this summer, with Marseille said to be interested.

Maresca stated earlier this season he’d fallen in love with Fofana, but with Chelsea looking to bring in at least one more centre back they could be faced with making a difficult decision.
