At the start of the year, Aleix Garcia was one of Barcelona’s top targets in their bid to reinforce the creative unit.

Garcia was coming on the back of a tremendous start to the season with Girona. His technical quality made him an appealing target for Barça, but the club were never quite able to reach an agreement.

At the end, Garcia spent the remainder of the campaign at Girona, before eventually joining Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Aleix Garcia on Barcelona links

Shortly after finalising his move to Bayer Leverkusen, the Spanish midfielder opened up on Barcelona’s interest.

The creative midfielder acknowledged confirmed that he was indeed in talks with Barça, but revealed that the club did not manage to secure an agreement.

“There were negotiations between my agent and Barcelona. Things did not take place because perhaps Barcelona’s economic situation did not allow them. If they wanted to sign me, I would have come to them,” Garcia said (h/t Diario SPORT).

Garcia joined Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around €18 million. He signed a five-year contract valid until 2029.

After enjoying a stellar campaign in La Liga, Garcia will look to reinforce Leverkusen’s creative unit, which is already stacked with talents such as Florian Wirtz, Jonas Hofmann and Amin Adli.

Did Barcelona miss out on a steal deal?

Barcelona’s failure to sign Aleix Garcia was certainly disappointing, especially considering the fact that the player himself was keen on making the move to Camp Nou.

However, with Xavi Hernandez gone, the addition of Garcia this summer would not have made much sense. Besides, Barça’s more immediate worry is to reinforce the holding midfield position.

While it would be unfair to say that Barça will not entirely rue missing out on Garcia, the club do have room to make better signings this summer, provided they play their cards right in the transfer market.
