Manchester United suffered a shock early exit from the Carabao Cup after losing to League Two outfit Grimsby Town on penalties last night.
Grimsby took a 2-0 lead over Man United thanks to horrendous goalkeeping from Andre Onana.
The United goalkeeper should have saved the first strike, and was in no-man’s land when the cross for the second was delivered.
Ruben Amorim’s side battled back into the game with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, forcing the tie to penalties.
A seething Amorim had nowhere to hide, and his displeasure showed in his post-match comments.
The Portuguese tactician said (via ITV Football): “I think the team and the players spoke really loudly today, so that’s it. We lost. The best team won.
“I think it’s really clear what they spoke, so let’s move on from this day and I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.
“The way we started the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure – we were completely lost, and that’s why I think they spoke really loudly.”
Amorim’s comments carry a chilling undertone. He is hinting that his own players may have downed tools.
It is eerily reminiscent of Jose Mourinho’s infamous final interview as Chelsea boss after a loss to Leicester City, when he accused his squad of betraying his tactical instructions.
For a Man United manager to imply such disobedience this early into a season, after such a humiliating cup defeat, represents a new low for the club.
When the dressing room and the dugout are already misaligned, the writing is on the wall. United cannot allow the rift to deepen further.
Amorim’s time at Old Trafford has been utterly disappointing. His tactical stubbornness and insistence on a 3-4-2-1 set-up have been jarring.
He has managed only 17 wins in 45 games (D9, L19). United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final last season.
But this should be the last straw. If the Red Devils want to salvage this season, he has to go immediately.
