Chelsea were thankful to Reece James as they rescued a point in the last minute against Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by the Cherries at Stamford Bridge, meaning it’s now three points from the last 15 on offer, with Enzo Maresca’s side winless in their last five games.
Chelsea still sit fourth thanks to Manchester City’s draw against Brentford, but if Newcastle beat Wolves on Wednesday the Blues will drop to fifth, although James is still backing the Blues to make the top four.
Chelsea started the game brilliantly and took the lead through an excellent goal from Cole Palmer, with Nicolas Jackson brilliant in the build-up.
The Blues played really well in the first half, with Maresca describing the performance as one of the best parts of the season.
Despite the performance it was a familiar story for the Blues as they squandered a number of opportunities to put the game out of sight and they were punished in the second half.
James rescued a point for Chelsea in stoppage time against Bournemouth.
Justin Kluivert equalised from the spot before Antoine Semenyo fired the visitors ahead as Chelsea’s performance levels dropped off.
James came on as a second half substitute and rescued a point for the Blues with a free kick in stoppage time, but there wasn’t time for a late winner.
It was a big moment for James and the England international spoke after the game about how he thought there was an opportunity to beat the goalkeeper.
“I knew the free-kick was shooting distance and I felt like that side of the goal was open. I tried to finish it as well as I could,” he told TNT Sports.
