Chelsea have signed Liam Delap but continue to be linked with other attackers, from man of the moment Nick Woltmade to Hugo Ekitike of Frankfurt.

One player who was mentioned earlier in the summer was Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa’s superb England international who had a great breakout season last year and showed what he could do in the Champions League as well as the Premier League.

Chelsea face impossible task persuading Villa to give up their star this summer

He’d be one of our favourite players to sign this summer, but as former Man U scout Mick Brown pointed out to CaughtOffside, it’s not looking likely:

“Aston Villa want to keep hold of Rogers. I’m not surprised the top clubs are looking at him, because he’s been excellent. Having been called up by England and featuring heavily for them, it always increases the eyes on his performances and the clubs who are interested. His profile and the level of interest in him has gone up,” Brown said.

“Ultimately, though, he got into the team through his performances for Villa. They’re confident they can keep hold of him, even with these financial issues they’ve got. He plays such a key role in Unai Emery’s team, I don’t think he or they have any interest in letting him go any time soon. There are plenty of other players they could sell before they look at him.”

Rogers remains a future target for title-hungry Chelsea

Sadly, we have to agree with Brown’s take on things. While we can eventually force Villa to lower their price, and maybe PSR concerns will force them into a sale, as it stands we just don’t have the leverage to make them give up their prize.

As his contract ticks away, expect us to be back however, especially if we establish ourselves in the Champions League and Villa struggle.
