Gary Lineker was astonished to hear Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim discussing relegation out in the open.
Despite their morale-boosting victory over Manchester City in the Derby, the Red Devils suffered four straight defeats afterwards, including three in the Premier League. This abysmal run left them 14th in the table at the end of 2024, while the new year begins with an untimely trip to Anfield on Sunday.
So following last Monday’s agonizing defeat to Newcastle United, Amorim didn’t shy away from relegation talk, admitting his players must now fight to survive, in a reality check that stunned many fans and observers.
For his part, Lineker described the manager’s words as ‘extraordinary’, even though he refuses to believe that Man Utd will be truly embroiled in a relegation scrap.
“Did you see after the game that Amorim confirmed he thinks the team are in a relegation battle? I mean, that’s extraordinary,” said the former England striker during his appearance on The Rest is Football podcast (via the Mirror).
“He said that. That’s not us saying that. I don’t think they are going to be in a relegation battle, I’m sure.”
Lineker also returned to the Red Devils’ poor display against Newcastle, especially in the first half, labelling it ’embarrassing’, while noting how the team has actually regressed following the managerial change.
“It’s not gone to plan for Manchester United this season. At the moment, Amorim’s record is worse than Ten Hag. We saw them play against Newcastle, and the first half an hour was quite embarrassing actually.”
Amorim has now lost six of his first 11 matches in charge of the club, with the stats painting it as the worst start to a managerial stint at United since 1932.
