Pundit Ally McCoist has singled out the form of Chelsea midfield duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caciedo as part of the reason behind the club’s positive start to the season.
The Blues broke the British transfer record twice in 2023 to bring the pair in, first on Fernandez in the January window and then Caicedo in the summer.
Both players have come under a lot of criticism for their performances, especially given the money spent, but their start to the season has shown they have started to find their feet and the Blues are reaping the rewards of that.
Enzo Maresca hasn’t been in the job long but Chelsea have impressed with their early season performances and are rightly receiving plaudits.
The attack has grabbed the headlines with the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson impressing and the Blues are currently the highest scorers in the league with 15 goals.
Things also appear to have improved in midfield, especially in the case of Caicedo, who’s been brilliant this season and arguably put in the best performance of his Chelsea career in the win against West Ham.

There are signs that the partnership between Caicedo and Fernandez is improving and McCoist believes they have played a key role in Chelsea’s good start to the season.
“I thought Chelsea completely underachieved last year,” he told talkSPORT.
“I wasn’t happy at all with the level of performance from two midfielders, Caicedo and Fernandez. I made a comment a couple of times that for a quarter of a billion pounds I’m looking for a lot more.
“I don’t think it’s any coincidence there’s been a massive improvement in their play.”

Chelsea will need the duo to keep up their good form, but there’s certainly been an improvement, and one you would expect given they are now more settled at the club and have got more used to the Premier League.
Both Fernandez and Caicedo are in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League squad for the league phase of the competition, but it would be a surprise if they both started against Gent on Thursday night.
