Hull City have reportedly been placed under a transfer embargo by the English Football League until the end of summer 2026.

The Tigers will not be able to register new players without the EFL’s consent. They are only allowed to bring in free agents and signings that do not involve any fees.

The news comes after Sheffield Wednesday were handed a three-window transfer ban by the EFL over late payments between July last year and this June.

According to the Telegraph, Hull owe almost £1 million to Aston Villa for Louie Barry, who spent the second half of last season at the Championship club.

They had recently reached an agreement with Villa for the permanent transfer of Barry, but their failure to clear debts has reportedly shelved those plans.

Hull plan to appeal against the ban, but the EFL’s measures have raised concerns over the financial stability of the club.

Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali has been in charge of the Yorkshire outfit since January 2022, but there are serious doubts about the club’s financial health.

Hull secured their Championship survival on the final day of the season with a draw at Portsmouth.

Ilicali dismissed manager Ruben Selles following a review of the campaign and installed Sergej Jakirovic as his replacement.

Jakirovic is eager to bolster his squad, but the embargo means Hull will not be able to commit funds for new signings.
