Huddersfield Town's 3-0 win against Leyton Orient was a sign that their summer activity in the transfer market could have been very effective indeed.
Huddersfield Town have sent a clear message to the rest of League One that they mean business this season, with a comfortable win against Leyton Orient on the opening weekend.
The Terriers had a lot of rebuilding work to do this summer following a disappointing end to the 2024-25 season, which saw them fade to an eventual 10th-placed finish in League One.
And an opening day fixture against Leyton Orient, who were only narrowly beaten in last season's play-off final by Charlton Athletic, was a tricky way to start the new season.
The win marked a vindication for the club's active summer in the transfer market, which has seen 13 new players arrive at the club, with 12 players having already departed, as well as being a perfect start to life in the managerial hot seat for new manager Lee Grant, who was appointed as the club's new manager following a lengthy search after the sacking of Michael Duff in March.
Two of Grant's new signings were on the mark for Huddersfield as they strolled to a comfortable win against Leyton Orient at the Accu Stadium on Saturday with three different goalscorers, two of whom were making their League debuts for the club.
Joe Low, who arrived on a free transfer from Wycombe Wanderers during the summer, opened the scoring for his new club after seven minutes, and another making his league debut, Alfie May, added a second from the penalty spot ten minutes into the second half, and Ruben Roosken rounded things off in stoppage-time at the end of the match with a third.
It was clear from the way in which Huddersfield faded throughout the closing weeks of the 2024-25 season that they needed a revamp of their first-team squad during the summer, but with so many players coming and going and the appointment of a new manager, how they might start the new season was open to conjecture.
But it didn't take the Terriers long to get off the mark, and there was much for Lee Grant to be satisfied about in seeing two of his new signings opening their goal-scoring accounts for the club on their home League debuts.
In particular, seeing Alfie May get off to a flying start will have pleased his new manager. FLW exclusively revealed in July that May was to make a £1.2 million switch from Birmingham City to Huddersfield. That's a lot of money for a League One club to be spending on a new player, and the player's confidence will have been done no harm whatsoever by getting off the mark so quickly.
It's early days, and there will be stiffer tests ahead. But Huddersfield Town look likely to be a team to watch in League One this season following what looks very much like an excellent summer's business in the transfer market. The league table doesn't count for much after just one league game has been played, but Lee Grant and Huddersfield will be delighted to be at the top of it nevertheless.
